Procedure

Step Image
Check to see if there is enough soil on a bench in the Turner crosshouse that is nor reserved by someone.  If there is not enough soil, you will need to get soil from 1224 PSL (shipping and receiving).  On the sign out clipboard write the name Daniel Warnock, whether the soil is being taken for research or teaching purposes, the date, and the quantity of what type of soil you took.  We generally use the Universal mix for transplanting.

Open the bags of soil on the bench in the crosshouse.  Multiple bags may be opened at once if desired.

Prior to transplanting the soil should be moist, but not clumping together because it is too wet.  If the soil is not moist water need to be added.  Spray the soil with water.
Mix in with a sterile shovel.  Continue adding water until the soil is moist.
Fill pots with soil almost to the top of the pot.  Do not pack soil.

Gently remove plug from its container.  Squeeze the bottom of the plug tray to help remove the plant.
Make a hole in the center of the pot for the plug or cutting in Jiffy 7 pot to fit into.
Press plant gently into the soil.  Do not pack in additional soil.  Add tag if desired.
Water plants in with an overhead wand.  If the plants are going on an ebb and flood bench, water them in on a cart first.  This prevents soil from splashing out and clogging the bench.
