Make sure the transparency adaptor lid is on scanner.  If a different lid is attached, remove it and put the transparency adaptor lid in its place.  See Daniel if you have not changed lids on the scanner before.

Turn scanner on.  Log onto computer (if you don't have a login, see Daniel).  Go to "Start --> Shut Down" and select Restart.  This is necessary for the computer to recognize the scanner.
If the computer freezes up when you select Restart, manually reboot it using the button on the front of the computer.

Place the slides on the scanner bed as follows:

  • The labeled side of the slide faces the scanner bed.  (If the slide has handwriting on one side and a typed label on the other side, place the typed label face down.)
  • Make five rows of five slides each.

Once the computer has finished rebooting, log in again and go to Corel Photopaint in the Start Menu.  Select "Scan Image" from the box that appears.  If for some reason the box doesn't appear, go to "File --> Acquire Image --> Acquire."

Set resolution to 2000 ppi and under "Preferences --> Scan Material," check "Positive Film."  (No changes to these settings are necessary unless someone has been scanning paper documents.)

Go to "View --> Show Scan Job Window" and make sure that all 25 jobs are checked.  If you don't have time to scan a full tray of slides, you may choose to scan less than 25 slides at once; if so, make sure the proper jobs are checked for the slides you have on the scanner bed.

Press "Overview" to see an image of the slides currently in the scanner.  Check to make sure the slides are matched up with the highlighted boxes; black space within the boxes is fine, but none of the actual pictures should be cropped out.  Click the "Scan" button to scan the slides.

Sometimes an error will occur during the slide scanning.  When that happens, click "OK" and close the scanner software.  In Photopaint, save the slides (if any) that were scanned before the error appeared.  Reboot the computer before attempting to scan again.

When the slides are done, the scanner screen will automatically close and 25 separate files will appear in Photopaint.

Maximize the photo window.  Save each file as follows:

  • Resize the photo using the toolbar at the top of the screen so the whole photo is visible.
  • Find the matching slide in the scanner bed.
  • Save the file as a JPEG in the D:/firelab slides directory. For the filename, use everything written on the slide label before the name of the person taking the photo. Add numbers to the end of the file name if there are multiple slides with the same name.
  • Click "OK" at the JPEG save dialog box.

Replace slides in their proper box.

Turn scanner off (leaving it on will burn out the lamp).  Log off computer.
