Preference Cage Cleaning Protocol

Materials and Equipment Needed

  1. Preference cage (best if cleaned while still on frame)
  2. Shop-vac (vacuum cleaner)
  3. Extension cord
  4. Hose attachment with Green Shield in bottle
  5. Cleaning brush (optional)
  6. Rubber dish gloves
  7. Lab coat

Safety Issues

Green Shield is not toxic to plants, although it is a sanitizing agent.  Rubber gloves and other protective equipment must be worn while working with Green Shield.  Keep extension cord and vacuum cleaner cord off of wet surfaces to avoid electrical shock.

Time Required

45 min to 1 hour

Procedure

Step Image

Vacuum plant debris off cage floor.  Ask greenhouse staff for the Green Shield.  Attach the bottle to the hose in the house with the cage.

If cleaning a cage on an ebb and flood bench, remove drainage tube from fertilizer tank.  See bench cleaning protocol.

Spray Green Shield over the cage floor.  Allow to soak and use a brush to clean if necessary.

Rinse cage thoroughly and allow to dry on the bench. Place drainage tube back in fertilizer tank.

Return all cleaning materials (Green Shield, brushes, etc.) to the location you got them from.

When cage is completely dry, disassemble the pieces.  Use masking tape to hold all pieces from individual cages together.

Return cage cover to a blue container labeled on the outside with the appropriate cage size on the cabinet in the lab and the bundled PVC pieces next to the blue containers.
