Use caution with the hot plate and let thermometers return to room temperature between measurements so the glass does not shatter.

| Set up ring stand, clamp, and hot plate as
shown. Turn hot plate on and wait for water to boil.
Place thermometer in boiling water and record reading after thermometer equilibrates. |

| After thermometer cools, place it in a beaker of ice water and allow it to equilibrate. Record the temperature. | ![]() |
| Compare hot and cold readings. Ideally the thermometers would be at 0oC and 100oC. The next best thing is for the hot and cold readings to be off by a similar amount and direction. |
